After reading “How beauty is making scientists rethink evolution” there are many things that I learned but also many things I was shocked by. To briefly summarize this article, Ferris Jabr discusses with readers the physical features of birds and their sexual ornaments. While using Charles Darwin’s theory he explains how male bird acquire beauty to attract mates and how these ornaments would be indicators of the mate’s qualities. Jabr goes against Darwin’s theory of sexual selection and implies that beauty is part of natural selection. After discuses this Jabr does an amazing job breaking down Prum’s theory of aesthetic evolution which I didn’t know about but with Jabr article I was able to understand quite easily.
From reading Jabr’s writing there are a lot of things that I have learned to bring with me into my own writing. The first important thing I learned was how I can slow down and explain each point just like Jabr does with each theory. He does it in a manner where no matter what form of knowledge you have on the topic you will understand. The second thing I learned is how important it is to give as much detail you can because as a reader if jabr didn’t break down each aspect of these species I wouldn’t know what he was saying and would be confused. This plays very well because even though his article was long I didn’t feel bored or wanted to click away he had me intrigued and thinking through everything.
